PIRATES PLUNDER: Industry experts predicting a Box Office that could be the first $200 million Holiday weekend ever for a single movie, with the release today of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Movie may be troubled (but only slightly) by a running time approaching 3 hours, but will compensate with release in 4,362 theatres. That's the widest release ever. Disney said to be projecting grosses on Friday night alone of between $15 and $20 million. And like many recent blockbusters, Pirates 3 is opening on the same day in a number of international markets, as part of Hollywood's on-going battle against (pardon the pun) Movie Pirates.
REGGIE CAPTURED: Reggie The Gator, the reptile media darling of Los Angeles, has been captured. On Thursday he crawled up on a lake bank for a little sunning when wildlife experts spotted him and nabbed him with a noose around the neck and duct tape around his yap. Ironically, they had been meeting nearby, talking about just how they might finally catch the elusive critter. The six foot long alligator, who had been living in Lake Machado in Los Angeles, had eluded capture for almost two years but in the process had become something of a Reptile Folk Hero. He inspired a zydeco song and a couple of children's books. Reggie is believed to be headed for a new home at the Los Angeles Zoo.
IDOL-EYED: The Associated Press reporting that the crowning of Jordin Sparks as the newest American Idol was viewed by 30.7 million people. That's big in today's television numbers but it's a sharp drop from last year's 36.4 million viewers. Some experts are saying a lackluster pool of contestants is to blame. Ironically, peak viewing on Idol this season happened when the much-derided Sanjaya Malakar was dominating headlines and some of the audience left the show when he was eliminated. Regardless, AP quotes one analyst as saying most televisions shows "would kill for this kind of bad news."
OCEAN'S 13 REVUE: Daily Variety's Todd McCarthy's positive review calls the movie "As smooth as a good mojito, as stylish as an Armani suit..", while predicting the pic should do boffo numbers. Starring George Clooney and pals Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, etc., etc., the movie has captured most of the buzz at the Cannes Film Festival this week. Review also notes "Cast, fab production values and a pace that never flags keep the fizz on the series."
LET IT BE: Reuters in London reporting today that a Berlin prosecutor had dropped an investigation into a more than 20 year old complaint against Paul McCartney. A 44 year old woman, Bettina Hubers, claims that the ex-Beatle is her biological father. The woman had also claimed that McCartney fooled a paternity test by sending a look-alike in his place.
TOO MUCH INFORMATION: The prestigious British Medical Journal today criticzed the growing trend for "designer vaginas" in the UK and the US. We are efforting reaction from the Hollywood/Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Community.
